Gay Men's Health in Utah
Established in 1999 in Boulder, Colorado, the Gay Men's Health Summit addressed the changing and growing needs in the gay community after twenty years of a single-minded, emergency focus on HIV/AIDS.
In 2000, the Utah AIDS Foundation hosted the first local Utah Gay Men's Health Summit in Park City, Utah. This movement continues today. We are seeking to reframe the discussion of health and offer positive, grassroots responsiveness and responsibility.
The Utah Gay Men's Health Summit continues to reach out to open a new discussion and response to the question of health in our community.
Goals of the Summit:
- Transform the public conversation on gay male populations from one narrowly focused on disease and victimization to an expanded focus including our rich community assets, and our collective resistance, resilience and resources.
- Strengthen local efforts supporting the health and wellness of gay, bisexual, queer and transgender men through the creation of grassroots health projects addressing not only HIV, but also a broad range of health challenges facing our communities.
- Revive individual and collective spirits after the first two decades of HIV efforts, recreating the infrastructure of a nurturing and life-affirming community, and restoring a broad community agenda focused as much on celebration and community-building as on responding to disease and discrimination.
- Draw public attention to the health and wellness of middle aged and elder gay men of all colors, classes, and ethnicities and support the creation of various local projects supporting the active empowerment of gay men over the age of 60.
